Storybook Illustration

Absolutely, I love working on projects from the first page to the very last. Depending on the project, I can help you develop the visual direction, create characters and environments as well as cover pages. For larger projects, I’m happy to collaborate with a creative team to make sure everything comes together cohesively.
-
Yes! I’m happy to work with independent authors as well as publishers and creative teams. Self publishing can involve a lot of moving parts, so I’m happy to help you understand what you’ll need from an illustration standpoint and how the artwork can be prepared for your chosen publishing platform.
-
Absolutely. I’m comfortable working within an established creative process and taking direction while bringing my own artistic perspective to the table. I also understand that illustration is only one piece of the publishing puzzle. I’m happy to coordinate with designers, editors, art directors and other members of your team to keep the visual side of the project moving smoothly.

Every project is a little different, but I generally start by getting very familiar with the story. From there, we establish the visual direction and develop the characters, environments, and overall look of the book. Once we have a direction, I move through the sketches and revisions before creating the final artwork.
-
There really isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. A book with twelve simple illustrations is a very different creature from a 40 page book packed with environments and a cast of characters. Timeline depends on things like page-count, illustration complexity, revisions, and my current project schedule. Once I know what you’re working on, I can give you a more realistic estimate.
-
Illustration pricing depends heavily on the scope of the project, so I quote projects individually rather than using a single flat price. Things like page count, number and complexity of illustrations, cover artwork, revisions and licensing rights can all affect the final cost. If you have a manuscript or project brief ready, send it my way! I can take a look and provide a quote based on what you actually need.
-
My illustration work is created primarily in raster based format because I love working digitally in a way that still feels like traditional drawing. Final files can be prepared in commonly requested formats such as PSD, TIFF, PNG or JPEG, depending on the projects requirements. If your publisher or printer has specific file specifications, that’s totally fine! Send them my way and I’ll make sure the artwork is prepared according to their needs.
-
Please give me the manuscript! 🤣 Seriously, the story is where I prefer to start. Understanding the pacing, tone, and little details that make your story special helps me develop illustrations that feel like they belong to your book rather than simply decorating the pages. If there are particular scenes, characters, or visual ideas you already have in mind, I’d love to hear those too.
-
Yes. Illustration licensing is handled according to how and where the artwork will be used. A book publication license and a license for things like merchandise, advertising, packaging or other commercial applications can be very different things, so I’ll work with you to make sure the intended usage is clearly defined.
-
I’m always happy to discuss your visual direction, references and the feeling you’re hoping to create. That said, I believe the best collaborations happen when you’re hiring an illustrator for their artistic voice, rather than asking them to become a human photocopier for someone else’s style. Tell me what you love and what you want your book to feel like. From there, we can figure out a visual direction that works for the story while still feeling authentically mine.
-
My illustration work is human created. I use digital tools because they give me the flexibility and control I need, but the drawing, visual decisions, composition and artwork all come from me. I like my illustrations to have evidence that an actual weird human made them. The occasional imperfect line is part of the charm.
-
Like having a very enthusiastic art nerd on your team. I’m collaborative, communicative, and genuinely invested in the projects I work on. I’ll keep you involved throughout the process, welcome constructive feedback, and do my best to make the experience feel organized and enjoyable.

Send me an email with as much information as you have about your project! A manuscript or synopsis, estimated page count and timeline, visual references and ideas you’ve already developed are all helpful. You don’t need to have everything figured out before contacting me. That’s part of what I’m here for. Tell me your story, we’ll figure out the rest from there.
